Hiking holiday at the National Park Hotel Klockerhaus

The Hohe Tauern National Park is a popular holiday destination for nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts and mountaineers. The region around our hotel in Krimml impresses with imposing glaciers, rushing mountain streams, thundering waterfalls, refreshing mountain lakes, blooming alpine meadows, green pastures and alpine forests. Hikers and mountaineers can look forward to a dense network of paths, well-signposted routes and, of course, countless lively mountain huts during their holiday in Pinzgau.

The Hohe Tauern National Park was established in the 1980s as Austria’s first national park. Today, the huge nature reserve covers an area of almost 1,900 m² and therewith, it is the largest nature reserve of the Alps and the largest national park in Central Europe. 266 mountains over 3,000 metres and more than 100 m² of glaciers form a unique high mountain panorama that you can enjoy from different perspectives during your holiday in the Pinzgau.

This area is characterised by its abundance of water, with over 500 lakes and almost 300 streams that provide refreshment on long cycling and hiking tours. The Krimml Waterfalls, another unmistakable highlight of the national park, will enrich your holiday in Salzburger Land.

With a bit of luck, you will discover more than 200 different minerals during your stay in the Hohe Tauern, including rock crystals and emeralds, which form the region's legendary crystal treasure. The flora and fauna is also impressive with a diversity that includes golden eagles, vultures, marmots, ibex, chamois and many other rare species.

What makes a hiking holiday in the Hohe Tauern so unique is the incomparable diversity of the landscape. On a hike from the valley to the highest peaks, you will cross all the climate zones that exist between Central Europe and the Arctic.

Hiking in the Hohe Tauern National Park

In summer a broad range of trails allows relaxing walks as well as challenging mountaineering expeditions. Enjoy the impressive Alpine scenery and discover and feel some of the highest mountains of Austria.

Krimml Waterfalls and the Krimml Achental Valley

A hike along the Krimml Waterfalls up to the highest waterfall is a must for every holiday in Krimml. Afterwards, you walk through the picturesque Krimml Achental Valley, passing busy alpine chalets and pastures, until you reach the Krimml Tauernhaus, the oldest “mountain restaurant” in the Upper Pinzgau. It is also possible to take the National Park Taxi to the Krimml Tauernhaus or even to the end of the valley.

Hiking holiday in the Zillertal Arena

A vibrant ski area in winter, a peaceful hiking paradise in summer in the midst of a dreamlike natural landscape. Special highlights for your summer holiday in the Zillertal Arena are the romantic Wildgerlostal with its lakes and the Jodelwande

The Klockerhaus as a starting point for your hike

Two wonderful hiking routes start in the centre of Krimml: the Tauernweg and the Panoramaweg. The Panorama Trail leads from the Klockerhaus via Gasthof Burgeck to Gasthof Falkenstein and then back to Krimml via the Tauern Cycle Path (approx. 3.5 hours' walk). The hiking route to the Seekarsee lake is also highly recommended (approx. 4 hours walking time).

Hiking in the Wildkogel Arena

The family-friendly ski resort Wildkogel Area is literally blossoming in summer. With its unique emerald deposit in the Habachtal Valley, the glacier landscape in the Ober- and Untersulzbachtal Valley as well as the highest mountain of Salzburg, the Großvenediger (3,666 m), the region has a lot to offer. Families who love to hike will be enthusiastic about many interesting themed hiking paths. As you can take the cable car to get up the mountain, the Wildkogel is perfect for families and slow-paced hikers. Directly next to the top station you will find the Adventure Arena Kogel Mogel, an exciting wooden playground with many different elements.

The Alp Summer in the National Park

In the Hohe Tauern National Park there are about 120 alpine pastures, where thousands of cows, sheep, goats and horses spend the summer every year. Much to the joy of hikers, because many alpine chalets are open and serve as great destinations for hiking tours.

For alpinists: the Venediger Tour

With a height of 3,666 metres the Großvenediger is not the highest summit of the Hohe Tauern mountain range (that is the Großglockner with 3,798 m), but it is the highest mountain in the province of Salzburg. Ambitious mountaineers definitely have to include this giant on their summer holiday in the Pinzgau. Nevertheless, we recommend taking an experienced mountain guide for your mountaineering trip (ask for example in the Mountain Guide Office Neukirchen).

On the road with the National Park rangers

The National Park Rangers are always on their way through the entire Hohe Tauern National Park in order to take care of the flora and fauna. In every valley there is a little “information hut”, where you will get to know the current whereabouts of the Rangers. Then you can drop by, watch the Rangers work and learn a lot about the nature in the Hohe Tauern National Park.
